This photograph, produced between 1883 and 1900, shows three seagoing vessels at the Orient Wharf on the eastern side of Sydney Cove.

At the left is a large auxiliary sail steam passenger ship, with a figurehead. She is probably one of the ‘Chimborazo/Lusitania’ class that worked to Australia from about 1876 to 1900. Near her is a small steam tender awaiting her next job. The three-masted ship-rigged sailing vessel is probably also a passenger ship, possibly one of the fleet of Devitt and Moore which maintained a sail-driven passenger ships service to Australia, perhaps longer than was economic. At least six small boats can be seen on this ship, confirming its passenger-carrying role.
