When The New York Times published aerial images documenting the damage caused by #HurricaneMichael on Mexico Beach, Florida, Dr. Lebron Lackey saw his house still standing. It was the last surviving beachfront house on his block. Our editors noticed it as well and followed the story. #NYTimes Miami bureau chief Patricia Mazzei was traveling to Mexico Beach on the same day that Lebron’s uncle and co-homeowner, Russell King, was driving down to inspect the property. Between recovery gridlock and some checkpoint hassles, Patricia found Russell, ladder down, mid-inspection. Lebron and Russell generously shared files of the construction process, showing the care and detail they put into it. The house, photographed here by @thecadejo, was designed to withstand much stronger winds than state building codes require in the Florida Panhandle. As they built their dream home last year, Russell and Lebron painstakingly documented every detail of the elevated construction, from the 40-foot pilings to the types of screws drilled into the walls. “We wanted to build it for the big one,” Lebron said. “We just never knew we’d find the big one so fast.” Visit the link in our profile to see more.
