When our specialist Cecilia Zi first saw this gilt-bronze Bodhisattva, little did she know that it contained hidden treasures inside.⠀

The sculpture underwent a radiographic examination and the test revealed several objects. ‘This discovery is really exciting because it shows for certain that this figure was consecrated in the 15th century,’ Zi says.⠀

‘The condition of the baseplate strongly suggests it is the original, which would mean that the Bodhisattva has not been opened for hundreds of years.’⠀

A rare and finely-cast gilt-bronze seated figure of Avalokiteshvara, Xuande six-character incised mark and of the period (1426–35). 10¼ in (26 cm) high. Estimate: £150,000–200,000.⠀
