Perhaps the most overt reference to antiquity is in della Robbia’s naturalistic rendering of fruits and flowers. Garlands were carved on coins, urns, busts, buildings, and tombs in antiquity to signify honor and commemoration. This practice regained popularity in Renaissance Florence where sculpted garlands, like the one surrounding Della Robbia’s Resurrection, embellished churches and other forms of architecture as symbols of glory and abundance. ?
