Edward, Prince of Wales (the future Edward VIII/Duke of Windsor) marches with the Grenadier Guards in 1914. When War broke out, HRH was desperate to serve, but as heir to the throne, it was impossible to allow him to fight in France. However, he was allowed to join the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards: “I am very happy to have joined this fine regt. & it was good of Papa to give me a commission. He can have no idea how grateful I am". -
