This double dose of #SoulTrain I’ll label the MJ Effect. Both broadcasted on November 3rd but 6 years apart. I’ve discussed many times before how @TheJacksons performing #DancingMachine ep 77 (10th show of season 3) was a game changer similar to how doing the #Moonwalk on #Motown25 changed entertainment in 1983. Soul Train hit its stride the top of that 1973 season w a new studio, set design and a cool new theme that established Philadelphia’s lush musical arrangements as the go to choice of dancers everywhere. The true magic of the show is it localized dancing. Before Soul Train “how we get down in Boston” was different than say how “they got down in Seattle”. Soul Train was the first viral show for blacks in America. But you had to be a fast learner: there was no VCR device in 1973 to rewind and learn like today (i see you old folk tryna get the Finesse down (?????) in slo mo on YouTube). So watching #DonCampbell (most regard him as the inventor of pop locking) or various members of #TheLockers display robotic miracles every Saturday was a tough job to master. It was also rare for artists to be THAT of the people. James & Joe Tex aside, most stars weren’t getting down like the audience who supports them (can you imagine Nat King Cole doin the mash potatoes?)—-so seeing this robot was a #StarsAreJustLikeUs moment. 6 years to the day in 79 MJ watched ep 310 (show 8 of season 9) w the rest of America & saw his future: @jeffreydanielofficial #CasperCanidate & @CooleyJaxson displaying the dance that would make him god in 4 years (watch the #Bad25 doc for those 4 collabing on MJs short movies) magic like this would occur weekly on this show. Enjoy. #TheBarKays #McfaddenAndWhitehead #TheJacksonFive
