‘Étude Pour “Les Plongeurs”’ from the collection of Nelson & Happy Rockefeller explores the seminal themes that defined Fernand Léger’s series of diver pictures: the separation of color and form, and the blending of the figurative and the abstract. Léger and Rockefeller met in 1938, when the former New York Govenor and 41st US Vice President commissioned the artist to paint a fireplace mural in his famed NYC apartment at 810 Fifth Avenue. The mutual respect that the two had for each other is exemplified by the inscription on the verso of the present drawing — “From a great painter to a great Gov”.
