Much of America woke up on Nov. 8 to the news of another mass shooting. A gunman had entered a bar in Thousand Oaks, Calif., late on Wednesday and, authorities said, fatally wounded 12 people, including a sheriff’s deputy; the gunman was found dead at the scene. So began a series of events that many Americans feel have become too frequent: the ambulances and crime scene tape, the candlelight vigils and public expressions of grief, the newscasts about motives and victims, the taking of sides about why this happened again and how it could be prevented in the future. That division is part of what @TIME Magazine sought to address in our “Guns in America” project, a partnership with the artist @jr that published in October. The project asked 245 Americans about their experiences with guns and invited them to share stories and perspectives about how to find common ground. A resulting mural, pasted on the Houston Bowery Wall on Oct. 26, was meant as a testament to the goals of hearing one another and searching for understanding. Shortly afterward, the mural was spray painted with the number 11 in red—an apparent reference to those slain in the Pittsburgh synagogue.
