Ambai’s husband put a gun to her neck. “I thought, this is finally the end,” Ambai recalled. “At least the beatings will finish.” But he didn’t shoot. Instead, he bashed her eye with a tire iron, sending her to the hospital. After a year of abuse, Ambai, who is 23, fled to a shelter in Goroka, Papua New Guinea. She isn’t alone. Women in Papua New Guinea experience some of the highest rates of domestic violence in the world. According to a @unitednations report, more than two thirds of all women will suffer abuse at the hands of a partner. To address the abuse, the country has government-sponsored shelters but many women opt for makeshift shelters and safe houses instead — they fear the police reports and official filings involved with formal shelters could easily stoke more violence. “It’s better to be independent,” says Angela Kaupa, who hosts a safe house. @bcsolomon took this photo of Ambai.
