As leaders work to understand how Britain’s looming departure from the EU may disrupt trade, one product highlights the potential impact: flowers. The Royal FloraHolland marketplace in the Netherlands sells some 12 billion flowers and plants a year, with nearly $1 billion worth destined for the UK. But if Britain leaves the EU through the process known as Brexit, the Netherlands and the UK will become separate markets. That would mean flowers now shipped duty-free might encounter tariffs, and that a perfectly choreographed system of distributing flowers exported not just from the Netherlands but also from countries like Kenya, could break down. Brexit has yet to be finalized, but flower shops in Britain say they are already feeling its impact. “People aren’t buying as much as they used to,” says Mary Woolcot, who owns a shop in London. @aturwin took this photo of flowers at the marketplace in Aalsmeer, #Netherlands.
