I currently teach 6th through 9th grade math in Queens, New York. I graduated from college in May and I’m also going for my masters in special education at night. One thing I don’t think many people realize is how much money teachers spend out of their own pockets. As a new teacher, I need many basic supplies. With the cost of graduate school, it is hard to have the money to purchase all the supplies my students will need. My mom is thankfully helping me pay for school but since my dad passed away 2 years ago it’s been tough. Public schools don’t always get the budget they need to best support our students. My students come from diverse backgrounds and more than half of them receive free/reduced lunch. I would love to give them the education they deserve.
