So is first amendment protest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Unless, of course, your skin is brown, it seems. ::: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Tear gas under the Geneva Convention is characterized as a chemical warfare agent, and so it is precluded for use in warfare, but it is used very frequently against civilians,” said Sven-Eric Jordt, a nerve gas expert at Yale University School of Medicine. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “That’s very illogical.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ::: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was summer 2015. The STL police had killed at least 7 unarmed black men in a year. On this day, STL City police had killed Mansur Ball-bey in his own backyard at Page & Walton, a block from my church. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, the Ferguson protestors and local activists showed up as we always do. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And they tear gassed us again. This time, they demanded the street be cleared-and then rode up and down the street gassing the sidewalks even though we had complied. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @wyzechef and i had to run into a nearby friend’s house; my 80 year old Godmother was trapped inside her walk-up duplex. And because it was a hot summer day, the doors & windows of my church were open-and gas drifted into where my mother was teaching Bible study. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ::: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A week later, I was at work, meeting with @thelookbykeo, and all week, I had sounded like a pack-a-day smoker even though I’ve never touched a cigarette in my life. Shaterra insisted I cancel my afternoon & go to the doctor. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ::: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was diagnosed with a bruised lung from the gas exposure. The doctor was sure that the most recent gassing contributed. She wasn’t sure if previous gassings did also-there is little long term research on the effects of this chemical, because there are “so few victims.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They look pretty intent on growing the number to me.“
