Photo by @Gerd Ludwig. Disaster tourism to the contaminated Chernobyl Exclusion Zone has increased to more than 50,000 visitors last year.

On April 26, 1986 at 1:23 am, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant blew up after operators botched a safety test, triggering an explosion and a fire that burned for 10 days. The radioactive fallout spread over tens of thousands of square kilometers, driving more than a quarter of a million people permanently from their homes.

In the 1970s, the town of Pripyat was constructed for the plant’s personnel. In its center, this amusement park was being readied for the annual May Day celebrations, when the reactor # 4 of the nuclear power plant exploded less than 3 kilometers away. Over the past few years the amusement park has become a major attraction for tourists who are flocking to the zone in droves.

Follow me @Gerd Ludwig where I frequently post photographs of the aftermath of the Chernobyl catastrophe.
