#BDHWCW | Alice Coachman, this week’s #WCW, was the first African-American woman to win an Olympic Gold Medal.
Born in 1923 in the deep south, she didn’t have an easy road. With the encouragement of her aunt and 5th grade teacher, she pursued her love of sports and earned a scholarship to college where she completed TWO degrees and won FOUR national championships in sprinting and high jump.

With WWII raging during her time at college, Alice never got to compete in the Olympics. But on August 8, 1948, Alice, then a teacher, finally got her chance at 24-years-old, to compete in her first Olympic games.

She leapt 5 feet 6 1/8 inches (almost my height) into the air setting a new Olympic record and winning a gold medal for high jump!
She didn’t stop there. Over the course of her career, she won THIRTY-FOUR national titles, was inducted into NINE halls of fame and became the first black woman to endorse an international product when Coca-Cola signed her as a spokesperson in 1952.
So on this #WCW, Alice Coachman, I tip my hat to you and share a small part of your incredible story:)
