By the late 1960s in New York, painting was supposedly in decline as artists began to pursue Conceptual art and performance. Nevertheless, a large contingent of painters continued to work innovatively in the medium. Abstract artists like William T. Williams found inspiration in geometry. In “Trane,” Williams uses the basic visual elements of color, shape, and line to create a composition that questions how we perceive space, while evoking the dynamism of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane’s performances. #SoulofaNationBKM⠀
