Mayra Ayala’s husband and 2 of her sons were murdered by members of the street gang MS-13. Now, she and most of her remaining children are in hiding. In #ElSalvador, the American government has poured money and force into efforts to stop the violent street gangs. Salvadorans are wary. In some ways, the involvement has increased safety. But Mayra’s husband was accused of being an informant after speaking with officials, who were trained by American advisors to build rapport with locals. “Talking to the police is a death sentence,” she said. “But it is good to have the police at the districts, because if they weren’t here, we wouldn’t be alive.” Forensics, policing, courts — American involvement reaches every layer. It’s part of an effort to send $760 million into Central America’s violent Northern Triangle. President Trump has periodically threatened to walk away from the program, spouting rhetoric, like saying that most Salvadoran immigrants are gang members in disguise. Officials from both countries say it would be disastrous to end the American involvement. @meridithkohut took this photo of the Ayala family visiting the 3 relatives’ grave.
