This week’s #WCW muse, Dame Whina Cooper, was one of the most extraordinary Maori woman of the 20th century. Born in 1895 on the mud floor of a cookhouse in the Hokianga region of #NewZealand, she defied convention and tradition at an early age. When a European farmer tried to reclaim Maori-owned mudflats in the village. Whina was chosen to speak on behalf of the Maori people. Her speech was so moving that she inspired and organized a peaceful protest and succeeded in stopping the foreign encroachment. All of this at only 18-years of age!
Whina inspired so many throughout her lifetime that she was given the title 'Whaea O Te Motu' (Mother of the Nation).
