Happy Yalda, an ancient celebration on the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere (Dec 21). Here in this moonlit night of the Alborz Mountains in Iran, a time-exposure image shows the Earth rotation with stars circling around the north celestial pole, marked by the north star Polaris. The foreground is Mount Damavand, a spectacular live volcano reaching 5610 meters high (18,400 ft). It’s the Asia’s highest volcano, just 70km away from Tehran.
Yalda is the second most important Persian celebration after Nowruz (the new year at the beginning of spring), an ancient winter solstice tradition of several thousand years old that brings families together to celebrate the rebirth of the sun after the longest night. Some of the Christmas elements share common origin with Yalda in the Zoroastrian culture and Mithraic tradition of worshipping the sun.
