Damn, this was a BOOK. Not just from a viewpoint of politics but from personal transformation and life story this is such a remarkable read. It’s fascinating to see Malcolm’s journey and his lifetime of learning paired with unlearning the internalized white supremacy that he was “brainwashed” into even as a child. He believed that this culture where whiteness was (and is) considered supreme, when compounded by institutionalized barriers of racism destroys the self worth of (in addition to the lives of countless) Black folx. His own journey of fighting against this is truly incredible. And while he dishes out necessary criticism of not just actively racist white people, he talks about the racism of Northern white liberals that would rather protest in the South than work to fix the problems in their own cities. This is still a problem as most white liberals complain about Trump and Republicans but mostly do nothing to address the oppression in their own cities or unlearn their own racism. Why do you think we have 60,000 homeless people in LA and the most murderous police force in the country? And yet somehow white liberals can find the fire to occasionally protest and get mad at the federal government...as if these forms of oppression aren’t also products of white supremacy when they happen in Hollywood.

In the words of Malcolm, “Yes, I will pull off that liberal’s halo that he spends such efforts cultivating. The North’s liberals have been for so long pointing accusing fingers at the South and getting away with it that they have fits when they are exposed as the world’s worst hypocrites.” #
I have always appreciated his guideline for how white people can be of service to the movement in creating our own organizations intending to work in solidarity with POC-led orgs. And also by building a movement of white folx committed to undermining and ultimately destroying white supremacy for the liberation of all people. I am grateful that I get to do this work in my political homes, @wp4bl and #ShowingUpForRacialJusfice .
