Photo by @amivitale // Children make their way home after school to their nearby village by walking along the railway tracks from Nanu Oya railway station in Sri Lanka. The railway was introduced by the British colonial government to transport tea and coffee from the hill country to Colombo and is still an important lifeline for the country.

Sri Lanka is a densely populated, seemingly idyllic island in the Indian Ocean finally emerging from decades of a brutal civil war. Today it is known for its beautiful white beaches, wildlife and culture. The hope is that it can move forward and begin to solve some of the issues of postwar reconciliation, a story I covered for National Geographic (@ナショナルジオグラフィック).
