Photos by @hammond_robin | “They’ve taken the best part of my life away from me forever,” said Maria Coliz from her home in Johannesburg, South Africa. “I don’t know how I’m going to go on.” Frederick, her husband, died in August 2016. Nine months earlier he was transferred from Life Esidimeni, a care facility, to a new organization, Masego. The care there worried Maria. When she saw cuts and bruises on her husband’s face, she asked that he be taken to hospital. She was ignored. When her son called the next day, the nurse said: “Don’t you know that he is dead?”
It has come to be known as the worst human rights scandal to hit democratic South Africa. In an attempt to save money, 1,700 people with mental illness and intellectual disability were moved from Life Esidimeni into unlicensed care homes. Within two years, 144 people died. Causes of death included starvation, dehydration, and cold. No one has faced criminal charges. The relatives want justice. To see more follow @onedayinmyworld
