This vibrant light show is the result of solar winds entering the magnetosphere above the northern and southern hemispheres. When charged particles from the sun strike air molecules in Earth's magnetic field, they cause those molecules' atoms to become excited. The molecules give off light as they are triggered. Aurora colours depend on the gas types that are being excited.
