We caught sight of this big, beautiful, black bear lumbering along the road this morning in Mammoth—just one of her paws the padded size of two of Wade’s hands. We took great delight in her (or his) appearance, always in awe of the sovereignty of the animal kingdom in mountain wilderness. But the thrill changed quickly to concern as the bear turned her head each way, never stopping her massive body, in fact lurching her mass into a fast run as she looked to cross the main road. We held our breath. Hardly wilderness anymore. And even though it is cold here, is it too warm for the bears to hibernate? We watched her walk back into the woods, hoping for her safety and wondering about all of the environmental complexities we face. ? ? ?❤️ #climatechangeisreal *note the two pedestrians walking oblivious to the bear behind them!!!
