“I still see the effects of our schools.” Ron Jackson is a warden of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation adult correctional facility in #Montana. On cell patrol, he sees Native American inmates who might be leading productive lives had they graduated from high school, and Ron says he feels partly responsible. Before becoming warden, he served on the Wolf Point school board. He pushed to curb discrimination against Native Americans, fought for support for Native children and challenged decisions to expel them. But his efforts mostly fell flat as the white majority on the board outvoted or ignored him. Now inmates point to the failures of Wolf Point’s schools at key moments in their youths. Wallace Archdale Jr., 23, is serving 16 months for domestic abuse. He was held back 2 years in middle school, then told he couldn’t graduate because he would be too old. He dropped out, he said. “They just watch you until you mess up, so they can kick you out.” @annieflanagan took this photo of Wallace in a segregation unit at the correctional facility.
