Photo by @williamodaniels | A room inhabited by displaced people in the capital city of Bangui, Central African Republic. In 2013, rebels from the Seleka alliance, a predominantly Muslim militia, overthrew the government. In response, Christian and animist militias rose up against the rebel government, launching attacks on their opponents and on Muslim civilians. Between 2013 and 2016, I traveled to the country ten times, photographing the fighting and its impact on civilians, working in regions that have been abandoned by the state for decades, visiting gold and diamond mines controlled by armed groups, and documenting the country’s faltering health system.
