#ArtWords: Developed by artists Robert & Sonia Delaunay, simultanism describes the couple's abstract painting style, consisting of interlocking/overlapping patches of contrasting or complementary colours. The term is derived from the theories of Michel Eugène Chevreul whose book of colour theory identified the phenomenon of colours looking different depending on the colours around them.

In Chevreul’s theory, and in reality, contrasting colours brought together (i.e. simultaneously) enhance each other, giving the paint greater intensity and vibrance of colour.
