When I founded The World at Night (TWAN) project 12 years ago with an international team of highly experienced night sky photographers, one of the main aims was to save the last remaining natural night skies on the planet by photos and stories that tell the values of this essential part of our nature, beyond being an astronomer’s laboratory. This is one of those places: La Palma, Canary Islands, where the night sky is protected by law, against light pollution; the extra careless light that doesn’t illuminates the ground but wastes to the sky. The locals appreciate this preserved heritage too which made their island an icon.
Here the Milky Way’s bright core rises over salt production ponds next to the ocean, in a single 20-second exposure photograph. This resembles what I was able to see visually there, but without the Milky Way’s color.
