A year ago, All we had were one way tickets to Iceland. We couldn’t afford a return. For 3 days we drove through an extremely dangerous snowstorm. Roads had been shut down and all flights cancelled to our destination. A number of avalanches had slid down the last stretch of mountain range into the sea and covered the road in the fijords of northern Iceland. But we needed to get to our last race, our last shot at a Winter Olympics qualification. We couldn’t see more than a few metres in front of us, the winds had covered the roads with snow. The car swerved every time a gust blew. Why do I speak so highly of my Mexican and Chilean friend? @german_madrazo and @yona_fena_garcia ? Because even at our lowest point where we were running short of food, money and time they stood firm. Not once in that car did anyone talk about turning back or giving up. Not once did they complain or find excuses. Instead they sang songs in Spanish with their terrible but happy voices. I told them They should stick to sports and leave the singing for the professionals. We laughed and joked and found ways to make a very dangerous and bad situation better. My biggest win that week wasn’t my Olympic qualification but my two new amigos who I will have for life.
