In the 1970s, artists reevaluated the role of the canvas and drew upon the techniques of performance art, suggesting that a painting itself could perform by interacting with viewers in three-dimensional space. #SamGilliam used a staining paint application method and removed his canvases from the stretcher, which were then draped and suspended, merging the boundaries between painting and sculpture.
