Be like water, or better even: Be like Oobleck! You might have heard of Bruce Lee’s guote: “Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” This is good advice for any climber! Even better though is to be like Oobleck (the name „Oobleck" is derived from the Dr. Seuss book „Bartholomew and the Oobleck“): . Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid that does not follow Newton's law of viscosity, i.e. constant viscosity independent of stress. In non-Newtonian fluids, viscosity can change when under force to either more liquid or more solid. If for example you punch or hit Oobleck, it would thicken and act like a solid. After the blow, the Oobleck will go back to its thin liquid like state. This behaviour is what @janhojer Is demonstrating here. It is essential in modern climbing. To be hard and solid where you need to be hard and to be fluid to absorb the impact. Please post any related questions you might have here. I planning to do a Q&A podcast in which I’ll try to answer any climbing technique and training related question you might have. @couch_owl #coiningclimbingterms #climbingtechniqueofthe21stcentury #bouldering #climbing #climbingperformancecoaching #oobleck #climboid #brucelee #belikewater
