Sandstone bouldering in desert landscapes are my FAV ?❤️ but these environments are particularly delicate.

@ladylockoff recently posted a photo of the Monkey Bar Boulder in Red Rocks, mobbed with climbers after a day of rain. Sandstone BREAKS when it is wet ?? and as crowds increase, the constant pressure on these already-fragile holds increases as well.

This past weekend in Roy, NM, a climber broke off a HUGE chunk of sandstone in the Dustbowl Roof, and conditions were bone dry. Just goes to show that sandstone in general is a softer/weaker rock, and must be treated with extra consideration.

The rock does not owe us anything. It will snap with impunity, disregarding our safety and our love of ‘classic’ lines. It’s up to US, the COMMUNITY as a whole, to take responsibility, educate others, and raise the standards of treatment for our climbing areas. Spread the word, have respectful conversations, and climb on ❤️??
