Photo by @simonnorfolkstudio | Another image of restoration work undertaken by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in Afghanistan. The restored Ikhtyaruddin Citadel, in Herat, Afghanistan, is central to the turbulent history of the city. The structure is an impressive example of surviving citadels in the region. Alexander the Great besieged Herat in 300 B.C.E. during his campaign against the Achaemenids. Known at the time as Artacoana (the ancient capital of Aria), Herat was rebuilt and called Alexandria of Aria. It is believed that the citadel was first established on its current site during this period.
