#tbt biking with dad! On the first #EarthDay in 1970 my dad was 12. After learning about the impact cars were having on the environment he decided to never get in one again! He actually managed to keep up his promise for a decade, biking to school and even across the country a few times. (He was raised Quaker but would ask generous local pastors if he could pitch a tent in their yards on multiple day trips). I knew he loved biking but he only told me this earth day part of the story for the first time last year. Even though he didn't share the story for so long - probably because he knows the incredible privilege that allowed him to make this choice and didn't want us to feel bad for using cars, or inspire a protest when he was trying to ferry all 3 of us kids by minivan - I love it because it reminds me of the clarity children have, and how so often it's the confidence of kids that can inspire ambition in adults, how they can remind us that our choices and commitments still matter, even in the face of overwhelming odds, even if nobody knows but ourselves/our families.
