?⁣ It’s been a long time since going upside down felt truly amazing for me. I’ve been moving more lately - sweating more - and I can feel the difference inside. For me, inverting has nothing to do with what my body can accomplish but everything to do with peace. When I’m upside down, I have to focus 100% of my attention on what’s here, now... Or I fall. Now, moving into complex yoga poses is far from the only thing that gets me to that place. Other moments in my day that require the same level of presence? Holding space for my almost 2-year old as she wails, upset and feeling like the world has ended because that the last of the almond milk is gone. That’s yoga, too - fighting the urge to walk away or raise my voice when she spends five long minutes crying over seemingly simple things. Yoga is dropping into my breath and instead of reacting (get off the floor so we can go to daycare!), sitting down with her, acknowledging her feelings and listening to her so I can feel and act from what’s right there. Yes, we’re out of almond milk. I know, I get upset when I can’t have what I’m thirsty for, too. No, there is nothing left in the fridge. Would you like some oat milk instead? Ok. Let’s sit here and be sad for a little, and then we’ll drink our milk and go to school. ⁣ ⁣ It’s NOT easy. There are days when I can’t manage this well and I want to yell at her back. WE’RE OUT OF ALMOND MILK AND ITS NOT THE END OF THE GODDAMN WORLD! But then... Yoga. It’s the practice of returning, again and again. Of being here. And when I’m here, it’s always easier to listen. The more time I get to spend of my mat practicing this art of staying present as I move, the easier it is to take it all off the mat and practice the art of not losing my shit when things are hard. ⁣ ⁣ And the best part? We don’t have to do forearm stands to get there. Your yoga, your way. That’s enough. x
