The Sentinel at #Zion National Park in #Utah is an excellent example of color variation in Navajo Sandstone. The top lines are almost white with descending stripes darkening into pink hues, and finally deep reds and browns towards the base. Geologists agree that the color comes from iron oxide in the rock, but the variations could be caused either by water carrying iron deeper or hydrocarbons bleaching the stone as they rise. It is certainly possible that both of these mechanisms contributed to Zion's beautiful color variation. Photo @ZionNPS by Avery Sloss, #NationalPark Service. #travel #FindYourPark #usinterior
