An important habitat for migrating flamingos, the saline, alkaline lake lies in the remote and arid Suguta Valley in the northern Kenya Rift. Hot springs discharge on its northern and southern shorelines and it is separated from Lake Turkana by a group of young volcanos that erupted as recently as the early 20th century.
