I am in Washington, D.C. together with my fellow board members of @womenssportsfoundation for the 33rd celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The theme of NGWSD 2019 is Lead Her Forward, to honor the many ways that sports push girls and women to achieve excellence and realize their boundless potential. - Girls’ opportunities to play sports in high school today are still not at the level that boys’ opportunities were in 1972 (3.4 million opportunities for girls to play today and 3.7 million opportunities for boys to play in 1972). Schools provide more than 1.15 million fewer chances for girls to play sports in high school. - Something else to be aware of is the fact that many schools still don’t have Title IX coordinators and fail to take adequate action or any action at all when students report harassment and assault, in violation of Title IX, which requires a prompt, thorough and fair investigation, accommodation of the victim (help changing classes, dorms, etc.) and protection from retaliation. - We will be asking Senators to cosponsor S.132, support Title IX, and to keep an eye on the Department of Ed and it’s new regulation. - Girls and Boys who play sports are more likely to have a healthy diet, get ample physical activity and sleep at least seven hour per night. All of these have been identified as important factors in preventing obesity and related disease. Sport participation was directly related to teens having a more positive attitude toward schoolwork, improved academic performance and higher grades, and higher aspiration for earning a college degree and post-college education specialization.
