Kansas-born Aaron Douglas was the leading visual artist of the Harlem Renaissance, the great flowering of the arts in 1920s and 1930s in New York’s predominately African American neighborhood. Douglas’s painting “Let My People Go,” rendered in his flat, silhouetted style, depicts the Old Testament story about Moses leading the Israelites out of captivity in Egypt. The work is a powerful allegory of liberation and enlightenment, one that has reverberated over time among African American communities faced with institutional and cultural persecution. #BlackHistoryMonth #AaronDouglas⁣
