It’s a good idea to tax the rich, but proposals targeting high income brackets are a “misfocus,” billionaire Bill Gates told The Verge.

Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have recently proposed raising the marginal tax rate to 70% on income over $10 million — but that plan doesn’t have Gates’ support. "If you focus on that, you're missing the picture," Gates said.

So what does the billionaire think lawmakers should focus on instead? They should look to fixing the estate tax, taxes on capital and Social Security.

And as for the modern monetary theory, which has support from politicians like Ocasio-Cortez and dismisses concerns about sovereign debt since countries that print their own currency can't really run out of money, “that’s some crazy talk,” Gates said.
