Photo by @dina_litovsky | A curious rat pokes its head out late at night in New York City's West Village neighborhood. These scavengers have prowled the city streets for so long that scientists have discovered two genetically distinct "uptown" and "downtown" species. But recently their numbers have risen, with
estimates ranging widely — from 250,000 to the tens of millions.
Researchers describe rats as smart and extremely social creatures, yet their tendency to spread disease makes them a perpetual target for public health officials. It will take many years, and millions of dollars, before the war between New York and its most iconic rodent comes to an end.
