If you’re sending a “secret admirer” message on #ValentinesDay, this 19th-century cobweb valentine might do the trick! Cobwebs—also known as beehives, flower cages, or birdcages—are a rare example of a mechanical or movable valentine consisting of a minimum of two layers of paper. The cobweb forms the perfect sanctuary to enclose a private message that can only be exposed when the recipient of the card carefully pulls up the thread. This one in the @MetDrawingsandPrints collection reveals a carefully painted image of Cupid in flight. ____
Artwork: Anonymous (British, 19th century). Cobweb valentine with morning glory, 1840. Watercolor, pen and brown ink on cameo-embossed paper. #TheMet
