To take this photo, photographer George Steinmetz had to soar high above the ground in a flying lawn chair. Okay, “flying lawn chair” might not be the technical term. It’s actually a motorized paraglider consisting of a backpack motor, a parachute-style wing, and 10 liters of fuel (that’ll allow George to fly around for 2 hours at 30 mph). This picture is a landscape shot of Niger’s salt ponds. Zoom in and you’ll see women working along the edges to maintain these colorful, mosaic-like desert springs. “An airplane moves too fast, a helicopter would be too loud with too much downdraft, and it dawned on me that this crazy little aircraft I was flying would open up a new way of seeing remote parts of the African landscape in a way that had never really been possible before,” George says.
