“#Drawing is like making an expressive gesture with the advantage of permanence”: Femme allongée captures the relaxation, sensuality, and intimacy that characterizes Henri #Matisse’s Nice-period works. Through these works, Matisse continues the long-standing tradition of lavish reclining nudes and odalisques established by Masters including #Titian, #Ingres, and #Delacroix. While many of these works involved rich, intricate interiors, Matisse’s focus was always on the model, as this intimate #charcoal from 1931 reveals.
