Storme Delarverie, often referred to as the "Rosa Parks of the queer community," is credited with throwing the first bricks in what's commonly referred to as the Stonewall riots of 1969 - but Delarverie herself would be the first to tell you it wasn't a riot.

"It was a rebellion, it was an uprising, it was a civil rights disobedience — it wasn't no damn riot," she's quoted as saying.

Storme died at age 93 in 2014, but her legacy carries on through her post-Stonewall work. She served as Vice President of the Stonewall Veterans Association and patrolled traditionally queer neighborhoods in New York. Art by @shaneebenjamin #blackhistorymonth

saintsaccharine I’m so glad that someone is actually acknowledging the contribution that Storme made to Stonewall. Marsha P Johnson said himself that he wasn’t even there when they started yet everyone keeps spreading that misinformation. He didn’t even identify as a woman (he said himself multiple times that he was a gay man who did drag) and yet the narrative that he threw the first brick continues. At this point I’m just sick of people pretending Stonewall was the epitome of gay rights activism. If you want to celebrate Marsha P Johnson then acknowledge what he actually did! He was one of the founding members of the Gay Liberation Front. He also helped found S.T.A.R, a group that provided housing to LGBT youth and sex workers. He did actual great things but everyone talks abt something he wasn’t even around for...
