Photo by @クリス・バーカード | The UNESCO world heritage site, White Sands National Monument in New Mexico, is the world’s only white sand dunes. The “sand” in these vast dunes is not composed of silica, they are entirely made up of gypsum. Unlike other rocks, gypsum is water soluble and when it rains on these mountains the sand is carried off as fast as the water can take it. Since there is no outlet for the rain the gypsum stays within the monument boundaries and then is blown back up the face by wind. If you were to pick up a few grains they would be translucent but from years of battery the scratches on these crystals reflect the sun's rays appearing white.
