(Vid from @drjoedispenza ) I believe that we can all make decisions that allow us to lead more empowered lives. And that with the right tools, resources, and mindsets, that we can accomplish more and be healthier, happier people than we likely could have ever imagined. # AND. I know that external realities that we live in also hugely impact the everyday lives we live. Being empowered is important, but by itself will not fix so many of the hugely destructive issues in the society that we live in: racism, sexism, capitalism, LGBTQ-phobia, etc. Without a deep analysis around how these systems of oppression operate (particularly in the areas where we have privilege) and consistent action taken to dismantle these forms of oppression, I believe that self-help and empowerment is problematically wielded as another tool that tells people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, while ignoring the very real external factors that impact people’s lives. # Those of us with great amounts of privilege, particularly in class, race and gender, must include anti-oppression as a part of our life’s work if we are ever to decenter our egos and reach to higher levels of consciousness (both socially and spiritually). And not just through charity work, which does not ultimately change the systems that caused the need for charity in the first place. If we are not being bold and taking risks by speaking truth, then how empowered to create change are we really?
