Last night I saw a notification from someone I followed - this person wrote a post on their page and tagged me.
But this was something more than a person I follow. This was a person that I followed in life.. in my career.
@andrewdiceclay threw me some incredible words on his page. I had literally followed him by being the next comedian to play @thegarden in NYC some 25 years after he sold it out. And not just sold it out but sold stadiums and everywhere else out. I watched his HBO specials and always believed I could captivate a large scale audience. He did it in the most fuckin’ amazing way.
Years later I would accidentally meet him as I was sitting outside Mulberry Street Pizza. I was alone having a slice and he walked out and sat at the outside table with me. I was a kid again watching a larger than life performer. We talked shop for a little bit and when he left I remember how much it meant to me and means to me still.
Now last night I see this post from Dice and once again I was that kid dreaming of what I wanted to accomplish because of the life of Andrew Dice Clay &
Steve Martin but this time I was dreaming backwards and reminiscing about my first time playing Madison Square Garden certainly not the last either judging by his words maybe we will all reunite there again sooner than later.
His career is stellar. TV shows... more and more comedy.. Incredible actor. Watch Blue Jasmine and see someone play a role a million miles away the comedian. A dramatic actor.
Thx Dice for showing not just me but so many other comedians that comedy has no limits. There is a kid reading this who is plotting and planning his career vision by vision. I wish you well kid. And remember... always eat your slice at the pizza parlor. You neva know who you may meet.
