one of my favorite things i’ve ever made. the short film #ThePond. #throwbackthursday #tbt check out jendra’s account for more still photos from it- and the film is available on itunes. beautifully directed by @dan_hannon, co-starring the wonderful #davidmorse. #Repost @jendradp with @get_repost ・・・ #blastfromthepast Here are some frames from one of my favorite short films. In The Pond, an emotional supernatural drama with phenomenal performances, the majority of the story took place outdoors at night in the woods. When the director called me, he had said he wanted to shoot on RED, back in the days of the Red One, and I talked him out of it because of the slow ISO and need for lots of big lights for huge night exteriors, lighting up a pond and an orchard. Instead we went with the F23, (back when that was a popular camera for TV series) because it was more light sensitive, and I could use faster 2/3 inch lenses and shoot wide open and still have a workable depth of field. Even so, lighting such a huge area on the budget of a short film was a huge feat. The worst part was that we had a huge thunderstorm in the afternoon while the pre-light was supposed to happen, so waiting that out not only meant setting us back several hours, but that it was dark by the time we started laying out cable and building scaffolding, so the slowdown was exponential. So we had just a few hours to shoot the huge, most important scenes and climax before sunrise. An interesting creative choice worth mentioning: Since the emotional tone of the story was about Shelly’s sudden loss of her husband in a car accident, I used a 1/4 Promist for the whole film so that I could have the flashbacks (with no filter) be very vivid in comparison, bucking the convention of memories being cloudy and distant. Instead, since her world was turned upside down, and she was emotionally in a fog, I wanted the memories of her happy times with her husband to be vibrant and crisp in comparison.
