It's hard to believe that this leatherback sea turtle hatchling, which would fit in the palm of your hand, will one day grow to be nearly six feet long! With huge front flippers to propel them through the ocean, leatherbacks are the most widely distributed of all sea turtles, ranging as far north as Alaska to the southern tip of Africa. Their massive home range is likely due to their ability to remain active in water below 40 degrees Fahrenheit - an extremely rare trait for a reptile! Like all sea turtle species, one of the greatest threats leatherbacks face in the open ocean is marine pollution such as balloons and plastic bags, items which are mistaken for a sea turtle’s favorite snack - jellyfish.
