I wrote my new book WOLFPACK to honor the leaders who came before me and to encourage the leaders who come next. @juliefoudy is one of the Wolves who led me. I remember one particular Foudy story, which I wrote about in WOLFPACK. When I was on the youth national team, I got to visit the locker room of US Women’s National Team. There is much I’ll never forget about that incredible day, but what I remember most vividly is a 5x7 picture next to the door--placed strategically to be the last thing each player saw before she headed out to the field. It wasn’t an image of a celebration, or the team cheering their last big win. It was a picture of their longtime rival – the Norwegian national team – celebrating after having just beat the USA in 1995 World Cup. It was a memorial to their own team’s last defeat. 5 years later, when I joined that team, I asked: “What was the deal with the picture of the Norwegian team? Why did you want that to be the last thing you looked at before playing?” They explained that their first job is to win. But when failure comes, the team isn’t afraid of it – the team is fueled by it. They insist upon remembering. Because the lessons of yesterday’s loss become the fuel for tomorrow’s win. I asked, Do you think putting that picture up worked? Foudy said, “Well, we brought home the first Olympic Gold the following year. What do you think?” I understood that in order to become a champion—on and off the field—I’d need to spend my life transforming my failures into my fuel. That day, Foudy helped me learn a new rule: We Women need to start using failure as our fuel. Failure is not something to be ashamed of—nor is it proof of unworthiness. Failure is something to be POWERED by. It was an honor for my brilliant wife @glennondoyle and me to share our home and this precious hour with Julie Foudy on her new @espn podcast #LAUGHTERPERMITTED. We talk and laugh about all things #WOLFPACK, love, life and the lessons we’ve shared. Thank you, Foudy!
